Abstract: RESUMEN

ABSTRACT This paper is entitled “The Evolution of Film Projection in the city of Cajamarca between 1900 and 1970”, and it comprises a chronological description of the issues and events that marked the screening of films in the city of Cajamarca during its first seventy years as a means of mass media. In summary, the investigation shows how the screening of films has evolved since the arrival of the new film phenomemem, such as the relevant stages of development, the places where the film screenings were held, the technology which was used, the genre preferences of citizens in the period of time that we are studying, and the means used to publicise them. Therefore, the main objective of the investigation is to describe the way film screenings evolved in the city, both generally and for each one of the aspects mentioned above. Using the historiographical narrative method, we examine a collection of primary and secondary sources, we contrast them with each other and then we chronologically narrate the relevant events in the evolution of film screening in Cajamarca between 1900 and 1970. In the early twentieth century, cultural Cajamarca was very interested in literature, theatre and other arts, and not only showed excitement and enthusiasm for the new century, but also for the new phenomonem which made its appearance in the mountainous city. Initially squares and markets were the backdrop for this new phenomonem, but these would soon not be enough. By mobilizing distinguished members of the Cajamarcan society to find a room that gives the people a space where they can perform their cultural activities comfortably, the Society of Film Theatre was born, which gave us the first home for film projection the city. In the following decades we see a growing interest in the projections, manifested in the continuous emergence of new film theatres, such as Sala de Cine de los Hermanos Ribotty, Cine Iris, Cine Ollanta, Cine Aurora, Cine Los Andes and Cine San Martín, all of which were (in their own time) the benchmark for technology, mayor cartelera best/biggest billboard and fashionable places for the population of Cajamarca. Film screenings during the period being studied were constantly developing, at first changing billboards weekly and subsequently towards the 1950s and 1960s changing daily, with the best-received genres by the population at these times being action and drama, especially in serial format. In conclusion, the film projection in Cajamarca was one of the favourite cultural media of the Cajamarca population, who attended en mass and always were always watching carefully that the projections were carried out as advertised, a fact that can be seen by the notes published in newspapers of the time. As citizens of Cajamarca and especially as communications students, it is of real importance to know the past of one of the most outstanding media of our history and to know the influence it had on the lives of the residents of the city.
