The present investigation addressed risk management in the energy backup project of a generator set trading company, following the good practices of the PMBOK Guide, 7th Edition, to determine the impact of implementing a Risk Response Plan. The project is located in the Arequipa district (Centro), Arequipa province, Arequipa department. Through an applied research methodology, with an explanatory approach and a pre-experimental research design, efficient risk management was sought. The research proposes deploying activities related to the proposed methodology, such as planning, identification, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, response planning, and risk monitoring, over a period of ten months, from September 2021 to July 2022. A Risk Management Plan was developed that established the methodology and guidelines for each sub-process of risk management. Forty-eight risks were identified, of which nineteen were prioritized as “ high“ through qualitative analysis. The Expected Monetary Value (EMV) obtained through quantitative analysis was $71,395, implying a negative impact on the project due to inadequate risk management. An investment cost of $19,800 was estimated for the implementation of the Risk Response Plan, and an efficient implementation was achieved, reducing the costs of planned preventive activities by 49.49%, resulting in a saving of $9,800 in the project's margin. During the execution stage, ten risks materialized and were managed according to the Contingency Plan, with the actual cost of corrective activities amounting to $5,200. In terms of cost-benefit, each dollar invested in the implementation of the Risk Response Plan generated a reduction of $4.04 in the impacts associated with poor risk management. Additionally, the project's final margin increased from 10% to 10.62% compared to the planned value, reflecting the results obtained in the project's development.
