ABSTRACT This research focuses on determining the effect of granular activated carbon on the improvement of the water quality of the Cumbe River in the village of Tomacucho, province of Cajamarca. Two granular activated carbon filters with local materials were built, the A filter is composed of: at the base by a layer of 0.25m of large stone, on it a layer of 0.10m of gravel and on it a 0.30m layer of active carbon and finally a layer of 0.25m of large stone so that the fall of the water does not erode the activated carbon. The B filter is composed of: at the base by a layer of 0.25m of large stone, on it a layer of 0.05m of gravel, on it a layer of 0.05m of coarse sand; on it a layer of 0.30m of active carbon, on it a layer of 0.05m of gravel, on it a layer of 0.05m of coarse sand and finally a layer of 0.20m of large stone so that the fall of the water does not erode the active carbon. It was also included in the two filters, both in the entrance and exit of the water; perforated pipe for better water conduction. Finally, water samples were taken from each filter twice a week for 3 weeks; the mandatory control parameters established in the water quality regulation were analyzed; These parameters are physicochemical and microbiological, among which are: Turbidity and true color, pH, residual chlorine, total coliform bacteria and thermotolerant or fecal bacteria. It was obtained as results: for turbidity a decrease from 5.61NTU to 1.16NTU (Filter A) and 0.72 (Filter B), pH at 25º C was variable but was in a range of 7.86ph and 8.28ph, there was no presence of chlorine residual since the results are lower than the maximum limit (<LCM), these parameters comply with the maximum permissible limits. For total Coliforms a large decrease was observed from 9200 NMP / 100mL to 920 (Filter A) and 110 (Filter B), this parameter does not comply with the maximum limits, but its decrease is evident, and for thermotolerant Coliforms it decreased from 49 NMP / 100mL up to 9.2 (Filter A) and 12 (Filter B). Therefore, based on the results, the improvement of the water quality of the Cumbe River is appreciated.
