The objective of the present investigation was to design an efficient control system that would increase the availability of centrifugal pulp pumps in the Gold Fields mine. To achieve this purpose, the basic tools of quality were applied, such as the Pareto and Ishikawa diagrams. We used primary sources of information such as interview and direct observation. One of our secondary sources of information was the historical record of events of pumps 3 and 4 stored distributed control system (DCS). In the aforementioned file, in the last year several unforeseen arrests of this equipment were found. With the use of dynamic tables and crosschecking the information on the hours of operation of each pump, it was possible to determine the number of faults and the duration of each of them. The study of this digital registry also allowed to know the causes that originated the detentions. Decomposing this information allowed determining a 1.5% unavailability in the pump control system. This indicator prevents the availability of the pump set is greater than 94.2%. After the design of the new control system, and thanks to the use of highly reliable instrumentation, it was estimated that the availability of the control system would be 100%; that is, the new availability of the pumps would be 95.7%. It was determined that increasing the availability of the control system by 1.5% allows production to increase by 82 equivalent ounces of gold per year, which represents an additional income of more than USD 100,000. This investigation concludes that no matter how minimal and insignificant the failures seem, we must consider analyzing them, since if we add up the time lost in the long term they can represent considerable economic losses.
