Currently, millions of people in the world do not have safe drinking water in their homes, and due to the increase in world population and the contamination of freshwater resources, water stress is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. Clearly, it is essential to conduct research focused on the use of non-conventional sources of drinking water, such as that provided by the oceans. For this reason, the objective of the present work is to carry out a Systematic Review to determine the influence of the type of device on the desalination efficiency for obtaining drinking water. The search for scientific information was conducted through some of the databases widely used in engineering and is restricted to research published during the last decade (2010-2020). The scientific articles selected for this work were analyzed using a database matrix, which made it possible to identify the latest discoveries made in this area. Studies where seawater treatment is not carried out for drinking purposes have been excluded from this work. Research conducted in recent years has shown that the efficiency of desalination for drinking water production depends significantly on the quantity and quality of treated water, energy consumption, investment and maintenance costs, and environmental impact. Moreover, because of their versatility and efficiency, membrane devices represent one of the most promising options for this process. Given the relevance and social impact of this topic, it is hoped that this work will motivate the interest of engineers in our country to research in the area of water desalination.
