ABSTRACT This study was developed in Yanacocha mine, in Tapado Oeste pit, benches TO-3408, TO-3420, TO-3384, TO-3432, TO-3396 and TO-3360, during 2017 to evaluate the effect of air decks in blasting to increase the dig rate. Due to several problems in the mine, such as decreasing production in recent years, and in order to lower costs; two types of air decks were tested to prove their impact in increasing the dig rate. Nine blasts were carried out on areas with advanced Argilic - propylitic alterations and with medium to hard rock hardness (45 MPa - 80 MPa), respectively. In 3 blasts, no air decks were used, and in the following 6 blasts, Cartuflex and Aquadeck air decks were used. In all the tests, the corresponding evaluations of the Dig Rate were made, and the average results in the Dig Rate in conventional blasts were 2,405 t / h. with a standard deviation of ± 312 and coefficient of variation 13%; with Cartuflex the average Dig Rate was 3,247 t / h with a standard deviation of ± 284 and coefficient of variation 9% and with Aquadeck the average Dig Rate was 4,549 t / h with a standard deviation of ± 549 and coefficient of variation 12%. The study showed that the use of air decks in blasting, have a positive effect, by increasing Dig Rate in 36% with the use of Cartuflex and 85% with Aquadeck. The use of these decks generated an annual saving of US $ 154,850.00 using Aquadeck and US $ 144,350.00 with Cartuflex
