Introduction: The food industries of Perú have taken the opportunity to produce food products with different characteristics for the consumer, thus increasing diseases such as overweight and obesity. Against this background, nutritional labels work as prevention to improve eating habits in the population. Objetive: To identify the factors associated with reading nutritional labeling in the food purchasing decision of students at a private university. Method: Applied type study, correlational level, quantitative, prospective and cross-sectional approach. 234 students from the health faculty of a university were surveyed. The Chi-square test in IBM SPSS vs 26 was used for data analysis. Results: Statistically significant associations were found with a p value <0.05, between the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample and factors of reading nutritional labels such as “Reading nutritional labeling of dairy products, snacks, cereals and meat derivatives“, “Situations of reading the nutritional labeling”, “Media that influence the reading of nutritional labeling”, “Prioritized age group” and “Understanding nutritional labeling”. Conclusions: The main factors statistically associated with reading nutritional labeling in the food purchasing decision were: sex, marital status, occupation, undergraduate program, number of children, family income and physical activity.
