The current students of the country's universities, belonging to the so-called “generation Y“, have a different way of learning and understanding their university environment; For this reason, Universities are facing a large number of reforms in their teaching process to serve more heterogeneous students and with different ways of learning. Those universities that pursue the objective of academic excellence must prioritize knowing more about its main characteristics, and thus generate not only adequate methodologies, but also an ideal classroom climate. One of the constructs that is gaining importance for this purpose, and that was raised in the field of human talent management, is “academic engagement”. The objective of this research work is to determine the degree of influence that academic engagement has on academic performance in students in the audiovisual communication career at a private university in Lima; Likewise, it seeks to determine the degree of influence that the components of academic engagement - vigor, dedication and absorption - have on the academic performance of students. To this end, a correlational study has been carried out, using quantitative tools, such as the UWES-S survey (Likert-type questionnaire), which measures the degree of academic engagement in the analyzed university population, and the final record of grades of the Cycles 2018-1 and 2018-2, in which this research was carried out, with the aim of carrying out a correlational analysis between both components. The results of this research show that there is a positive and strong influence of academic engagement on academic performance, in the same way with the components of academic engagement (vigor, dedication and absorption), where it is highlighted that absorption (feeling of well-being in the task performed and having difficulty separating from it) has a greater degree of influence on academic performance. Finally, some proposals are made to improve the study of engagement in the studied area, in which there have been no previous investigations on this matter, and thus improve academic performance thanks to the use of this construct.
