ABSTRACT The present thesis evaluated the replacement of rice husk ash by coarse and fine sand types in the preparation of mortars of volumetric dosage of cement: san of 1:4 on their resistance to compression, sorptivity and density. Rice husk ash was replaced by fine sand and coarse sand in dosages of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% for both cases. Mortars were made with Portland cement Type I of the company Pacasmayo, fine and coarse sand of the quarry “Calderón“ located in the district El Milagro and ash of rice husk obtained from the Miller “Molinorte“ located at Moche, a constant water / cement ratio of 0.80 was used. A thermogravimetric analysis and a heat loss curve were performed to determine the behavior of the rice husk upon calcination. The ash to be used worked as an artificial N-type pozzolan according to ASTM C618; In the same way, the fine aggregate characterization was performed under the Peruvian Technical Standards for moisture content (NTP 339.185), specific gravity and absorption (NTP 400.022), dry loose unit weight and dry compacted unit weight (NTP 400.017), Fineness module and granulometric analysis (NTP 400.012) and sand equivalent (NTP 339,146). Cubic specimens of 5cm side mortar were prepared and tested under compression according to ASTM C109, sorptivity according to ASTM C1585 and density according to ASTM C642. By replacing the rice husk ash in the sand, it was sought to increase its compressive strength and decrease its sorptivity and density, and thus to take advantage of a resource that is often disposable like rice husks and used in an Ecological mortar. The standard mortar for fine sand reached 71.8 kg/cm2 , 4.6 mm/s 1/2, 1.5 mm/s1/2 and 1.73 g/cm3 for compressive strength, initial absorption, secondary absorption and density respectively; While for coarse sand 211.3 kg/cm2 , 4.4 mm/s1/2, 6.5 mm/s1/2 and 2.01 g/cm3 for compressive strength, initial absorption, secondary absorption and density respectively. The optimum design for fine sand mortars was 2% ash, where results of 91.8 kg/cm2 , 3.1 mm/s1/2, 1.7 mm/s1/2 and 1.63 g/cm3 were obtained for resistance to compression, absorption Initial, secondary absorption and density respectively; While for mortars made with coarse sand, its optimum design was 1% ash, where 226.8 kg/cm2 , 2.6 mm/s1/2, 2.5 mm/s1/2 and 1.96 g/cm3 were obtained for compressive strength, Initial absorption, secondary absorption and density respectively.
