This research aimed to determine the optimal operating parameters of an ion exchange resin module for the removal of calcium ions from a model solution in order to improve the operating conditions of conventional equipment on an industrial scale. A pilot scale ion exchange resin module was built, which has a metallic structure where the equipment and materials were assembled, a main storage tank with a 10 L capacity and two 6L resin storage tubes, pump of water, Leawtit S1567 ion exchange resin and accessories. The total dissolved solids, pH, conductivity and the concentration of calcium ions of the treated water were quantified. The operating parameters evaluated were: resin weight, volumetric flow and concentration of the model solution. Using Minitab software, the optimal values of each parameter were determined, which were set in the following measures: Resin Weight (1770 gr), Volumetric Flow (1.3 ml/s) and Concentration (0.5 g/L), under these characteristics of the parameters of the ion exchange equipment provide better results in the process of obtaining water free of calcium hardness.
