The current study focused on small scale artisanal (informal) mining, currently considered a global issue. With aim of addressing this issue, some countries, such as Peru, have introduced new legislative frameworks, thus facilitating the formalization of such activity. However, these initiatives are still limited and it’s the full impact is not measurable yet. Thus, this research investigates the impact the small-scale artisan mining formalization had on the financial ratios of the small artisan miners in the region of north Papagayo, Pataz? Due to the limited research in the area of study, this thesis used a descriptive methodology based on a constructivist paradigm. With the aim on deeply exploring the different aspects of the problem, a single case study approach is used, this is supported by interviews and secondary data from the finance section of the case organization The results of this investigation reveal that the formalization process did not have the expected results in the studies organization. For instance, even when the organization did utilize the formalization process, the barriers faced by small miners forced the case organization back to informal activities in order to secure its survival. Therefore, the results of the study imply that the success of the formalization process needs to be accompanied by government initiatives that address the existing barriers faced by artisanal miners.
