The research aims to identify the relationship between the dimensions of coping strategies and dispositional optimism in parents of children with Down syndrome. The design is a simple correlational study. The sample consisted of 90 parents. Two tests were applied, the Ways of Coping Instrument (EEC-M) and Life Orientation Test optimism scale (LOT-R). The main findings show a direct relationship between dispositional optimism and the dimensions: problem solving, emotional avoidance, professional support, aggressive reaction, positive reappraisal, expression of coping difficulty. An inverse relationship is observed with emotional avoidance and aggressive reaction. However, no significant relationships were found with religion, hope, social support, cognitive avoidance, autonomy, and denial. Finally, significant differences were found in the dimension of social support, where mothers scored higher (25.00) compared to fathers (21.00). The conclusions suggest that the greater the use of coping strategies, the greater the dispositional optimism experienced by fathers and mothers of children with Down syndrome.
