This study analyzes the translation of taboo language into Brazilian Portuguese in the dubbing of the first season of the Spanish prison drama series Locked Up (Colmenar et al., 2015). It focuses on how vulgar and offensive expressions are adapted to fit the norms and cultural sensitivities of the Brazilian audience. The research assumes that the original series in Peninsular Spanish frequently uses obscene language to reflect the harshness of the prison environment and the interpersonal relationships within the prison. Questions about the translation strategies used and the influence of censorship conventions in Brazilian media are raised. This research is based on theoretical notions about the study of obscene language (Fuentes-Luque, 2015), the study of dubbing (Ávila-Cabrera, 2015; Chaume, 2004; Hurtado, 2013), and notions of censorship in AVT (Da Silva, 2016; Moura, 2020; Mayoral, 1998). This study is expected to shed light on how translators and dubbers manage the use of taboo language and cultural adaptation, while complying with the restrictions that may be imposed by local regulations. This research is relevant not only to the academic field of audiovisual translation but also to dubbing and localization professionals in Brazil and similar contexts.
