Nostos sp. is characterized by being a cosmopolitan cyanobacterium, capable of living in extreme conditions of temperature and nutrients, this condition allows it to develop chemical compounds as a protective measure, these compounds have biochemical properties beneficial to humans such as: antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral, etc. properties. In the present work, the main groups of chemical compounds were determined by phytochemical screening, total phenol content by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, antioxidant capacity by the ABTS+ and DPPH methods, of the methanolic extracts of Nostoc sp. The results obtained from the phytochemical screening of Nostoc sp. revealed the presence of polyphenols, tannins, phenolic oxyhydryls, carbohydrates, flavonoids, sterols, triperpenes and cardenolides, on the other hand, the total phenol content of the 10 percent extract (3.0743 ± 0.04 mgEAG/g) was statistically significantly higher (p<0.05) than the 5 percent (2.6327 ± 0.04 mgEAG/g) and 20 percent (2.1127 ± 0.06 mgEAG/g) concentrations; however, the antioxidant capacity analysis for both ABTS and DPPH obtained a better result at 5 percent with a value of 2.325 ± 0.03 µmol trolox/g and an IC50 of 0.581 mg/ml. Therefore, it can be concluded that the cyanobacterium Nostoc sp in this study possesses a series of compounds with antioxidant capacity, a property that can be used in fields such as nutrition, medicine and cosmetics.
