In 2019, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) developed a project for technical assistance for a Peruvian Municipality to identify opportunities for increasing organic waste recovery. The main motivations between both organizations to develop a project were the reduction of waste disposed of in the landfill, the creation of enabling conditions for the sustainable operation of a future waste recovery plant, and the incorporation of best management practices of organic waste in the district. Approximately 50% of municipal waste is organic (Ministry of Environment, 2019), and less than 4% is composted (Climate Action in Peru, 2018). Municipal environmental management still needs more diversity and innovation, especially when it is related to organic waste. Additionally, a lack of municipal strategic planning and poor analysis of information (essential to design policies related to solid waste management) does not enhance opportunities for new investments in technologies associated with organic waste recovery. The project methodology included technical support to a team of municipal officials, tools for better understanding the municipal environmental management, the outline of organic waste recovery action lines while emphasizing the importance of information analysis and systematization and developing specific recommendations to increase waste recovery in the district. This approach was aimed at finding short—and medium—term solutions for the Municipality. As a final product, some recommendations were developed for the Municipality in 2019, which made it possible to build the necessary information to explore potential areas that increase the use of organic waste in the district. Continuing with more specific activities, both institutions built new work plans for 2020 and 2021. Only the work carried out during 2019 will be presented in this document
