The main objective of this study was to determine and contrast the “taxonomic rigor” achieved in two types of laboratories, on one hand, accredited laboratories and in the other the laboratories from specialized institutions. Therefore, identification requests from samples of “benthic macroinvertebrates” (MIB) were identified and compared, taking as source the analysis results from laboratories found in the appendix of several Environmental Management Instruments, consequently the term “level of taxonomic resolution” was used as an indicative to the taxonomic level accomplished by each of the laboratories. The Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity is a scientific institution whose Limnology division has been developing activities since 2011 to generate and transmit scientific knowledge, as well as cultivate specialists with solid proficiency in their area of study. Among the principal activities as division, many are focused to identify and assess the impacts derived from productive activities on continental aquatic ecosystems, studying the hydrology and hydrochemistry of water bodies, the trophic and functional ecological organization of hydrobiological communities and the taxonomy of aquatic organisms. One of the most significant contributions made by the division are the generation of a scientific reference collection where the different continental aquatic organisms are cataloged and the research applied to the ecosystems in which these organisms live with their various components. Despite the extensive experience that specialized institutions may demonstrate, the provisions issued by the Ministry of Production – PRODUCE are not considered within the framework of Supreme Decree No. 013-2020-PRODUCE for the purposes of taxonomic analysis of “hydrobiological samples” and their viability to be presented in environmental studies, stating that the entities in charge of carrying out the taxonomic identification analysis of hydrobiological samples must be accredited by the “National Quality Institute” (INACAL) to be accepted in the reports of the Environmental Management Instruments. However, the accreditation of an institution does not ensure that the identification of these organisms is appropriate in taxonomic terms. In the present study, the taxonomic resolution was applied only to the Class Insecta due to having a greater number of taxonomic keys available compared to other taxa usually found in the MIB samples such as nematodes, annelids, mollusks or other arthropods like crustaceans and arachnids that live in aquatic environments. Subsequently, 68 taxonomic vii identification matrices were selected from different IGAs (Environmental Management Instruments) and biological monitoring studies. The matrices were grouped under the category of “commercial laboratories” and “specialized institutions” and the non-parametric Wilcoxon test was applied to show significant differences. The results obtained showed that specialized institutions presented a higher taxonomic resolution than commercial laboratories. This difference could be due to factors specific to each organization. Furthermore, the difference in objectives and goals in each of these may influence the results and consequently the level of precision achieved in the taxonomic determinations.
