The purpose of this project is to propose a design to improve the stability of the slope at the Chacapampa Tailings Deposit Expansion. To achieve this, different design configurations were proposed, differing from the original approach, including two types of slopes designed with the objective of ensuring safe operation. This is due to the vulnerability to the potential risk of waste material displacing into the Mantaro River, located downstream of the deposit. This research was conducted in compliance with environmental standards, minimum criteria, and safety factors established by the Dam Safety Guidelines of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA), Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (ICMM), and the Environmental Guide of MINEM for the stability of mine waste deposit slopes. This allowed for the establishment of both geotechnical and civil design criteria to develop alternative proposals, using static and pseudostatic models analyzed in Slide 2.0 software. During this process, the characteristics of the geotechnical formations present in the Chacapampa project area were taken into account, where the tailings deposit expansion is mainly composed of Compacted Tailings. This material consists of low plasticity sandy silt (ML) according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), with a density of 23.00 kN/m³ and shear strength parameters such as cohesion and friction angle of 45.00 kN/m³ and 33.00º respectively. Additionally, other formations like Old Compacted Tailings, Colluvial Soil, and Bedrock also constitute the geotechnical units of the study area. The material exhibits optimal shear strength, which is suitable for bearing loads. Finally, upon analyzing the results, it is concluded that Alternative No. 2, with a slope of 1.8:1.0, demonstrated greater stability compared to Alternative No. 1 and the original design. This is evidenced by the minimum safety factors obtained, which reached values of 1.90 and 1.42 under static and pseudostatic conditions, respectively. Additionally, this option increased its storage capacity by approximately 480,000.00 m³.
