The globalization of audiovisual media through streaming platforms such as Netflix presents a variety of content in which different linguistic varieties are observed, such as dialects. Translating dialects within the audiovisual field presents some complexity due to the grammatical and cultural characteristics that are part of these. Therefore, this research focuses on analyzing the translation of the African American Vernacular English (AAVE), a non-standard dialect of English that reflects relevant aspects of the African American community, into Latin American Spanish in the context of a story about racial injustice manifested in the Netflix miniseries When They See Us (DuVernay, 2019). This study assumes that the original dialogues in the miniseries contain distinctive and identifiable AAVE grammatical features. Furthermore, the research assumption is that this dialect has undergone a standardization process in its translation into Latin American Spanish. Finally, it assumes there was an adaptation and a partial loss in the translation process of the dialect depending on the context and communicative situation. The research is based on the existing theory of linguistic variations, dialect translation, and audiovisual translation, particularly subtitling. This study intends to explore a new point of view in dialect translation, specifically from AAVE to Latin American Spanish within the audiovisual field.
