A design method is developed using the concept of relative transmissibility for the solution of the problem of large elongations of the insulator at the base of a building under earthquake action. This design method will consider the use of more inerter isolators at the base of the building to reduce the isolator elongations. The procedure will start by deriving the relative transmissibility equation for an isolation system with inerter; with the equation already stated, we will proceed to determine the most optimal design area taking into account a range of values for the damping factor (0.05 > 𝜁 <0. 10), for the inertance (ratio between the mass of the structure and the mass of the inerter) 0 >µ <1 and for r between 0 and 5. Subsequently, the state space model in Matlab is used to calculate the initial elongation of the isolator and the elongation of the isolator when the inerter is used. The results show the effectiveness of this methodology, since the elongations of the insulator obtained when the inerter is used present a significant percentage of reduction (greater than 50% in the case studies) compared to the initial elongation.
