Objective: Identify the risk factors for the presence of surgical site infection in post-operative patients with periarticular knee fractures at the Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray and the Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and Method: A retrospective case-control study was conducted with a total of 78 patients. Double-entry tables of mean and standard deviation, absolute values, central means, and percentages of categorical variables were designed. For the bivariate and multivariate analysis, the Odds Ratio (crude OR, adjusted OR respectively) was used, taking into account the 95% confidence interval with a significance of 5%. Results: Males represented 53.8% of the patients, with a mean age of 55.1 years and a surgical time of 112.5 minutes. Obesity was found in 51.3%, followed by hypertension (HTN) in 29.5%, while tobacco and alcohol use were infrequent. Among the clinical variables, having a fracture accounted for 23.1%, previous surgical intervention 19.2%, and use of drainage (Hemovac) 9%. In the comparison between the population with and without surgical site infection, the characteristics of the population with SSI were similar to those without SSI regarding age, alcohol, tobacco, previous surgical intervention, osteoarthritis, and renal insufficiency. However, among patients with SSI, 57.7% were obese, 65.4% had HTN, and 30.8% had a previous fracture. Significant differences were found between median surgical time and use of Hemovac (p=0.03 and p=0.005 respectively). Conclusion: Patients with a history of obesity, HTN, and previous fracture have a high risk of developing surgical site infection in periarticular knee fractures.
