Using toxic products in the finishing stage of baby alpaca fur production generates heavy metals, acrylamides, and volatile compounds in the environment; that is why the fur industry is considered one of the most polluting industries. This research aims to develop a coating with nanoparticles for baby alpaca skins, which has antibacterial, photocatalytic, biodegradable, and low toxicity capacity. Ag/ZnO and Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles based on valerian root extract were synthesized to confirm the formation, crystalline structure, particle size, and shape of the synthesized nanoparticles, which were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRATR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and to analyze their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) degradation in aqueous medium. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated, and it was observed that Ag/TiO2-containing skins gained antimicrobial activity, demonstrating that Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles have a very strong inhibition efficiency towards Escherichia Coli, Aspergillus niger and Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, the biodegradability and toxicity of baby alpaca skins impregnated with Ag/TiO2 nanoparticles were evaluated, having favorable results; these promising results could be attractive for the fur industry and future engineering applications.
