The objective of the study was to determine the percentage of medullated fibers in the fleece of first shearing male Huacaya alpacas from the Mallkini ranch and to estimate the phenotypic correlations between the percentage of medulation and the characteristics associated with fiber fineness. Samples were taken from the mid-rib area of 120 alpacas, which were analyzed by four operators (A, B, C and D). From each sample, the diameter of 600 fibers was evaluated and the type of medulation was identified using projection microscopy (IWTO-8, 2011). The effect of fineness class (fine and superfine) and operator on the percentage of medulation was evaluated. Fibers were classified according to the type of medulation: fragmented (MEDF), discontinuous (MEDD), continuous (MEDC) and strongly medullated (MEDf) of which 12.56%, 13.05%, 27.07% and 0.09% were obtained, respectively. Additionally, the percentage of unmedullated fibers was 47.23%. Mean fiber diameter (MFD) averages increased when the type of medulation changed from fragmented, discontinuous to continuous and strongly medullated. Likewise, the increase in MFD is directly associated with a higher percentage of total medulation (MEDT) obtaining a correlation of r=0.60. In conclusion, there is a high percentage of medullated fibers in the fleece of first shearing male Huacaya alpacas, of which continuous medulation is the most prominent, increasing as the MFD increases.
