The objective of this research is to use the biochar derived from the residual biomass of the pruning of avocado plantations (Persea americana Miller.) to serve as an organic amendment for the immobilization of heavy metals (arsenic, lead and cadmium) and cyanide in the topsoil during the revegetation phase in the closure of a mine tailing. The pruning was collected and conditioned, followed by lignocellulosic analysis, for the production of biochar by slow pyrolysis in an artisanal pyrolytic furnace designed and built. The physical and chemical properties of the biochar were evaluated, as well as its capacity as an organic amendment in varied concentrations (0 to 5% w/w) during a revegetation simulation under pH conditions (>7.50) and in a reference area with low mining contamination. Plant survival and development of Stipa ichu, as well as variations in pH and metal content (As, Pb and Cd) in plant tissues and topsoil were analyzed. The avocado prunings presented low moisture and high lignin levels, while the derived biochar presented high fixed carbon content, low bulk density, high organic carbon content, alkaline pH and adsorption capacity of functional groups, together with low surface area and mesoporous pore size, without metals (As, Pb and Cd) or cyanide. Although biochar did not affect the mobilization of arsenic, lead and cadmium, it did influence the mobilization of cyanide, increasing its concentration in the topsoil from 1.75 mg/kg to 85.98 mg/kg. This study highlights biochar as an effective alternative in solid waste management, and its application as an organic amendment in the closure of mining tailings, particularly in the immobilization of cyanide in the topsoil of mining areas.
