Objective: To determine and to analyze the rate of success, the rate of complications and its associated factors, of the phacoemulsification cataract surgeries at the Hospital Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión (HNDAC), supported by the Lions Club “Sight First“ Program between January 2005 and August 2006. Method: A descriptive, observacional, cross-sectional, retrospective design was used. All the phacoemulsification cataract surgeries supported by the “Sight First“ Program at the HNDAC performed between January 2005 and August 2006 were identified, and its respective success rate, complications rate and its risk factors were analyze and calculated. We defining treatment success like a postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) major than 20/40, and we calculated each potential risk factor (RF) its respective odds ratio (OR). Results: During the study period a total of 541 patients was intervened, 307 (56,75%) women and 234 (43,25%) men, with an age average of 70.22 ± 9.44 years old, most of them with nuclear type cataracts (67,65%), of the right eye 57,67%, a 34,4% with some comorbidity, most of the cases by arterial hypertension (22,7%), allowing as well that a total of 150 (27,7%) surgeries performed by ophthalmology residents physicians, with a 89,5% success rate, a 14% intraoperating complications rate by posterior capsule rupture and a 9,1% post operating complications rate, most of the cases by posterior capsule opacity (5,4%).
