--- OBJECTIVE: Determine the relationship between feeding practices and nutritional status of pregnant women at term attended by the National Materno Perinatal Institute during January-February 2016. METHODOLOGY: This study was observational, with correlational, cross-sectional design and quantitative approach. The sample was composed of 368 pregnant women at term attended by the National Materno Perinatal Institute during January-February 2016. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v.22, being made a descriptive analysis by calculating the frequencies and dispersion measures and inferential analysis for nonparametric Chi square test was used to estimate the association between the two variables. RESULTS: From the results it is observed that 29.1% were overweight and 9.2% obese, 50.5% have a weight gain “low“, 28.5% of pregnant women have anemia and nutritional status of pregnant women is “inadequate“ in 73.6 %. Regarding food practices are inadequate 83.4% and 13% is moderately adequate. It was evidenced that food practices are associated with weight gain (p=0.029) and feeding practices are related to the nutritional status of the mother (p=0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Feeding practices are related to the nutritional status of pregnant women at term (p=0.000), showing that more frequent feeding practices “inadequate“ there is an inadequate nutritional status and greater frequency of feeding practices “appropriate“ there is a adequate nutritional status. KEYWORDS: nutritional status, food habits, weight gain.
