The purpose was to determine the safety and antihypertensive efficacy in animals and humans of the ethanol extract of the leaves, fruit juice and methanolic fraction of the juice of Passiflora edulis. Security in animals orally was a single dose in albino mice and repeated doses during 28 days in Holtzmann rats, the antihypertensive activity was evaluated in hypertensive rats by L-NAME, and the possible antihypertensive mechanism of action was noting diuresis in rats quantifying levels of nitric oxide in blood of rats and in vitro antioxidant activity with DPPH, the phase II clinical study was performed in volunteer patients with definite diagnosis of hypertension and low ethical criteria. The results indicate a lethal dose 50 (LD50) of 2000 mg/kg for leaves and extract juice from the fruit of P. edulis ranking as no toxic substances, and repeated dose toxicity of the extract of leaves showed changes in alanine aminotransferase slightly above the allowable values, histologically, the majority of organs were normal and only two cases showed changes in liver and kidneyrelated process inflammatory and vascular congestion, products of the plant analyzed decreased up to 17% the systolic blood pressure in hypertensive rats have been shown to be explained by diuretic effect (p less than 0.02), increased level nitric oxide (p less than 0.005) and antioxidant capacity (p less than 0.01), the juice of the fruit of P. edulis decreased by 6.73 mmHg and 5.33 mmHg systolic pressure and diastolic pressure respectively compared to the placebo group and no adverse effects. Concluded that under the experimental conditions the juice from the fruit of P. edulis has been shown to be safe and have antihypertensive effect in hypertensive rats and patients with mild hypertension.
