The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of human echinococcosis in 9 communities of the district of Yanahuanca, Province Daniel Alcides Carrión, Pasco, during August 2004. Human echinococcosis was determined using portable ultrasonography and chest X-ray examination. The study examined 949 individuals, thus a coverage of 51.7%. All of 949 persons were evaluated for abdominal ultrasound while only 829 (45.6%) allowed us to take chest X-ray. The overall prevalence of human cystic echinococcosis was 5.5% (52/949) with 95% Confidence Interval form 4.1% to 7.1%. There was significant association (p less 0.05) to the age with positive status using portable ultrasound. The ratio of liver:lung hydatid cysts was 5:1 and cysts of type 5 were the most frequently found (56%) followed by types 1 (17%) and 2 (9%), respectively. The prevalence of human hydatidosis in this endemic area of Peru is one of the highest reported in Latinoamérica. The coexistence and close human contact with infected dogs over a relatively long period is probably important in transmission of E. granulosus. In addition, the poor sanitation and hygiene conditions of the area in study would contribute to the development of metacestode. Key words: human, prevalence, hydatid cyst.
