--- Twentysix surficial sediment samples from a parallel profile to the Peruvian Continental Margin (Tumbes – San Juan) have been worked by petrographical and geochemical analysis to determine the variability of the composition and state of preservation of the sedimentary organic matter, with respect to its origin and to productivity and oxygenation conditions. Eighteen organic fracciones that compose the sedimentary organic matter have been identified, the mayority of these are from the amorphous type, which is evidence of the high productivity that characterize the zone. The 98.5% of the organic matter is from marine origin, only 1.5% is from terrestrial origin and is restricted to the north (Tumbes and Piura) and central (Callao) zones; the distribution of the fluvial sources (rivers), the anthropogenic effect and the distance to the coast play a fundamental role that determine the latitudinal variability of the terrestrial contribution. The preservation of sedimentary organic matter along the Peruvian Continental Margin is related directly to the dynamic of the oxygen minimun zone (OMZ), with a more preserve organic matter where oxygen bottom conditions are minimun. The productivity has also a fundamental role, it is responsable of the high flux of organic material that goes through the water column and reaches the sea floor, but the bottom oxygen conditions determine the preservation, which is very evident in the zone off Callao and Huacho, where the OMZ is more intense. Key words: sedimentary organic matter, Peruvian Continental Margin, organic petrography, origin, state of preservation.
