--- Introduction: Burnout syndrome appears when the caregiver of a person with a chronic illness comes exhaustion and physical and emotional stress to the intense demands of the person in need of care, to the point of frustration that finally collapses, showing the disease. The problems of the caregiver are a fact often overlooked by the medical team, thus obviating the effects of this negative influence on the development of the caregiver. Early detection of overloading allows caregivers intervention health team in preserving the health of the caregiver. Objective: To know the level of the burnout syndrome in family caregivers of patients with chronic neurological disease of the Hospital San Juan de Lurigancho 2011-2012 Method: Descriptive study of clinical cases. The interview of family burden Objective and subjective (ECFOS-II) and the Zarit scale were applied to the caregivers responsible for the care of patients with chronic neurological disease, who attended the clinic of neurology at the Hospital San Juan de Lurigancho. 68 Cases were considered to satisfy the criteria for inclusion. Result Interviewed 68 families, 64 (94.1%) corresponding al feminine gender, the average age were 45.2. The 77.9 % of these caregivers were housewife. Chronic disease most common condition that needed a caregiver was the sequel for cerebrovascular disease in 32 (46.4%) cases. The interview of family burden Objective and subjective (ECFOS-II) and the Zarit scale showed that the overload intense was present in 72.1 % of family caregivers, and that there is an increased level of overhead to greater disability of the patient Conclusions: There is a greater burden on caregivers of patients with chronic neurological disease and a direct relationship between the degree of dependence of a patient with chronic neurological disease and the degree of overload on family members who are in their care, in addition the relatives that have more overhead are those that family caregivers with the sequel of cerebrovascular disease and cerebral palsy.
