--- The objective of the present monograph was to determine the levels of maternal milk lead concentration of breast-feeding mothers of the Center of Health Don Bosco of the Constitutional Province of Callao. For the fulfillment of this objective the dosage de lead was made in maternal milk in 34 breast-feeding mothers, who attended the Center of Health continuously. The chosen method was Spectrofothometry of Atomic Absorption with graphite furnace by its high sensitivity. The average of the maternal milk lead concentrations was of 21,68 ng of lead / g of milk, which exceeds in a 433,6% to the allowed value according to the WHO (2,0 – 5,0 ng/g), which represents a serious problem for nursing infants population, being these most susceptible to the effects of the exhibition to lead, because the percentage of absorption is greater (as much by oral route as inhalatory way) in comparison with the adult population. This greater absorption originates a greater rate of lead retention and a greater prevalence of nutritional deficiencies; it increases the absorption of lead by gastrointestinal route, increasing this way the efficiency of lead capture in the bone and originating an incomplete development of the hematoencephalic barrier. Key words: poisoning, lead, breast milk.
