-- Objective: To determine the degradation of glial scar and the presence of neuronal regeneration in rabbits with experimental spinal cord injury who received application of pancreatin. Design: Experimental. Institution: Faculty of Medicine-San Marcos, Small Animal Clinic-San Marcos University, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Natural Resources “Juan de Dios Guevara“, National Institute of Neurological Sciences, Centre for Magnetic Resonance-DIPSAC, Lima. Biological materials: New Zealand rabbits (n = 12) Methods: We divided into two phases, first with a biochemical method for the determination of glial scar degradation effect by pancreatin and the second with an in vivo method, which reproduces the model Hashimoto spinal cord injury after two months, made the formation of 2 groups at random, an enzyme group (receiving 5 mg of pancreatin in 100 µL 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 6.7 intrathecally) and a control group ( received 100 µL 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 6.7 intrathecally) both for a period of 21 days. The experimental animals were evaluated before, after injury and during the administration of the enzyme with the clinical trials BBB (Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan), Tarlov, open-field activity, inclined plane and cylinder. Scores were compared in clinical trials as well as histopathological findings through non-parametric Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. For the study was considered a confidence level of 95%. Results: Clinical evaluations performed at regular intervals on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 for the application of pancreatin (enzyme group) and phosphate buffer (control group) showed no statistically significant difference between groups. Was obtained in the enzyme group lower cavity area expressed in mm2 and percentage with respect to control this being a significant difference (p = 0.008 and p = 0.042 respectively). There was obtained between the enzyme and control group a significant difference in connective tissue content, the presence of astrocytes and myelinated area (p = 0.222, p = 0.421 and p = 1,000 respectively). In the control group does not appear axonogenesis or very little in comparison of the enzyme group that has more dimensions of axonogenesis and even evidence of amputation neuromas. Conclusion: The pancreatin applied in experimental spinal cord injury promotes the reduction of intramedullary cavities and axonogenesis type neuronal regeneration. -- Keywords: Spinal cord injury, experimental model, neuronal regeneration and pancreatin
