The rapid maxillary expansion (RME) was introduced in the 19th century and has been classically described in the literature as an orthopedic procedure in the treatment of transverse maxillary deficiency. Although its main effect is observed clinically in the mid palatal suture and maxillary area, recent studies suggest that the orthopedic effects can achieve deep skeletal structures of the skull. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the skeletal effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on cranial base in growing patients. The sample consisted of ten growing patients (eight male and two female) diagnosed originally with transverse maxillary deficiency, who required rapid maxillary expansion as part of their orthodontic treatment in San Marcos University. Lateral radiographs of each patient were obtained before treatment (T1) and immediately after the active phase of treatment (T2). The evaluated variables were: NSBa angle, NBa/F.H. angle, SN/ENA-ENP angle, F.H./ENA-ENP angle, SN/F.H. angle, S-N distance, S-Ba distance and N-Ba distance. Data was analyzed statistically by using the paired samples Student´s t-test (P < 0.05). According to the statistical analysis, significant changes were found in all the evaluated variables immediately after the active phase of rapid maxillary expansion. Therefore, it can be speculated that RME has had not only local skeletal effects but also produces significant skeletal changes at cranial base level.
