--- The normal lacrimal production in seemingly healthy dogs (Canis familiaris) by means of the Schirmer’s Tear Test was determined. The present study was carried out in the Small Animals Clinic of the School of Veterinary Medicine of Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos; 123 dogs grouped by sex, age and skull type were evaluated. The lacrimal production average was 16.43 ± 1.52 mm/minute, being distributed in a range from 11 to 20 mm/minute. The sex values averages of lacrimal production were of 16.75 ± 1.35 mm/minute for males and of 16.10 ± 1.63 mm/minute for females and no significant statistic differences were observed. The averages of the lacrimal production for different skull types were of 16.36 ± 1.67, 17.03 ± 1.20 and 15.60 ± 1.08 mm/minute for mesocephalic, brachycephalic and dolicocephalic respectively, with significant statistic difference (p less than 0.05) for brachycephalic group. In regard to the age, the range of 16.37 ± 1.40 mm/minute for Age A (0 - 3.9 years), 16.62 ± 1.66 mm/minute for Age B (4 - 7.9 years) and 16.30 ± 1.62 mm/minute for Age C (8 to more years) were found; no significant statistic differences among the groups were observed. Key Word: lacrimal production, dogs, Schirmer tear test.
