---In this work, chemical and bromatological studio were performed on the fruits of Carica monoica known as “chamburú” that were collected in Tingo Maria, Leoncio Prado province, Perú. The chemical and nutritional composition of the pulp was determined emphasizing their content of β- carotene (1569,62 mg/kg), vitamin C (528,3 mg/kg), pectin (7,8 mg/kg), papain (0,35 %), iron (43,9 mg/kg), magnesium (3034,3 mg/kg) and antioxidant phenolic compounds as quercetin, rutin, caffeic and ferulic. The assay acute toxicity of freeze-dried pulp in mice was classified according to Williams' criterion as practically non toxic with a lethal average dose (DL50) of 9791, 40 mg/kg. The anatomo-pathological study determined that some mice that received the highest doses (3000 mg/dl) presented severe congestion and hemorrhage in spleen, hypertrophy of the Islands of Langerhans in endocrine pancreas and tubular hypertrophy in kidneys. In cases of lethal doses of 1200 and 600 mg/kg they presented cellular damage and metabolic phenomena of fat accumulation; being difficult to reach toxic diets because it is normally fresh and has 90, 7% of water content. All other samples studied presented signs of traumatic death or from anesthesia, reflected on congestion found. The effects of ingestion of freeze-dried pulp in the growth of rats that were 28 days old subjected to three different diets: diet 1(without supplements of vitamin A and C), diet 2 (without supplements of vitamins and minerals) and diet 3 (balanced diet) for five weeks, were evaluated by measuring the increase in weight and the food conversion factor values. The results showed significant increase (p < 0, 05) of weight and food conversion factor in rats that consumed the fruit with diet 3. Biochemical tests were performed in blood at the beginning and at the end of the assays finding that the rats that consumed the fruit had an significant increase of glucose and total proteins in rats that had diet 3 in relation to its controls (p < 0,05). Levels of hemoglobin presented significant differences (p < 0, 05) showing an increase in the rats that consumed the fruit with diet 2 in relation to its controls of the diets 1 and 2. The levels of cholesterol showed a major reduction in animals that consumed the fruit with diet 2. There was significant decrease of urea and alkaline phosphatase in animals that ate the fruit with diet 3 in relation to its controls (p < 0, 05). The aspartate aminotransferase levels showed a major decreased (p < 0, 05) in animals that consumed the fruit with diet 2 in relation to it control of the diet 3. Carica monoica represents a rich source of nutrients and phytochemical compounds with antioxidant properties beneficial to human health and should be used as functional food.
