-- Megalobulimus is a neotropical genus of land snails that represents the largest living snails, they are also edible for the Peruvian Amazon people. There are nine especies of Megalobulimus registered for Peru and the knowlegde of them is only based on shell characters. The main goal of this research was to discriminate species of Megalobulimus with red peristome distributed in Perú on the basis of shell and soft parts (genitalia, digestive system, palial complex and pedal gland) characters, and allometry in order to evalute their taxonomic status and to obtain knowlegde for the conservation of these species of edible snails. The surveys were carried out between 2008 and 2010 in San Martín, Huánuco, Cusco, Madre de Dios and Junín. Literature and electronic data base were also revised for Megalobulimus species with red peristome. A detail description of shell and soft parts, as well as multivariate analysis of shell and genitaly, shell allometry and geografic distribution was carried out. There are two reports for Perú of Megalobulimus with red peristome, Megalobulimus capillaceus and M. separabilis. Three morphotypes (San Martín, Huánuco and Cusco) of M. capillaceus were recognized. Morphotype “Cusco“ was undoubtedly different of remaining morphs. This discrimination is based on qualitative and quantitative analyses of shell and soft parts characters. This morph was recognized as a new species, Megalobulimus sp.nov. This species has a more elongate shell, a club-shaped penis, a longer epiphallus and a longer free oviduct in contrast with other morphotypes. M. capillaceus has a widest shell, a prominent epiphallus and the presence of a free oviduct external diverticule than M. separabilis. On the contrary, M. separabilis has a more elongate shell, its epiphallus is hardly differedciated from the vas deferens externally and it has a free oviduct internal diverticule. For Perú, M. capillaceus is retricted to San Martín and Huánuco; while Megalobulimus sp. nov was found only in Cusco, although his presence in Bolivia is not excluded. It is possible that M. capillaceus can be endemic for Perú because the samples reported as M. capillaceus for other countries and deposited in museums are not related with the morphotype “San Martín“, considered the “type”. The implications to distinguish these apparently closely related species, on the basis of their red peristomes, is beyond academic interest. This work provides elements for the sustainable use of these species of edible snails, as well as to protect the biodiversity of Perú.
