-- Variation of weight in healthy newborns with exclusive breastfeeding is important information that health services should take in consider. Related factors are essential elements at the time to elaborate strategies in order to face the consequences of an important weight loss such as a long hospitalization and/or the use of formula. Objectives: Determinate the association among the factors: sex of the newborn, maternal parity and maternal age with the weight loss during the first 72 hours in newborns. Materials and Methods: analytic study, restrospective, longitudinal. Population conformed by all term newborns of delivery caesarean between January and December 2008. Newborns selected had to fulfil the criteria of inclusion being essential information about weight at the moment of delivery also of each one of the three next days and the exclusive breastfeeding. Results: 703 hospital charts were included in the study. The factors male sex, primipares mothers and adult mothers were the major percentage. The loss in percentage of weight at the third day of life was 16,80% (between 5 and 10% of weight), 21,90% (>10% of weight) and 61,30% (less than 5% of weight). The average of loss in percentage of weight was 7, 81% ± 2,77% and the average of loss absolute of weight was 261,79g ± 98,70g. It was found association statistically significative between the weight loss and the maternal age with p less than 0,001. Logistic regression for the factor maternal age and the weight loss showed a R2 of 0,035. Conclusions: there is a difference statistically significative between the factor maternal age (old mothers) and the weight loss ≥ 5% and >10%. Nevertheless this association only would explain 3,5% of the weight loss in newborns in this study. There should be other factors that could represent the 96,5% of causes of this weight loss. The maternal age ≥35 years is considered an important risk factor but not the unique in this weight loss in newborns in this study. -- Key Words: newborn, weight in newborns, weight loss and maternal age.
