Background: Children under 3 years of the developing countries have an average of three episodes of diarrhea per year, with peaks in the lower quintiles of wealth; each episode deprives the child of nutrients needed for growth, leading to malnutrition and a depressed immune system, mainly due to improper handling of food during the illness. Objective: Determiner maternal knowledge and practices about child feeding during Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD) by age and educational level of the mother fein the February to March of 2010. Design: A quantitative approach, descriptive, comparative, observational, and prospective Location: Unit of Oral Rehydration Solution (URO) National Institute of Child Health (INSN), Lima-Peru. Participants: Mothers whose children under 24 months had ADD. Interventions: 125 mothers were interviewed, from a non-probability quota sampling. Chi² test was used for comparison of proportions with a confidence level of 95%. Main outcome measures: Most mothers had poor knowledge (83.2%) and inappropriate practices (96.8%) on infant feeding during the ADD. Results: Significant differences were found: maternal knowledge with the level of maternal education, related to the importance of oral rehydration serum (ORS) and oral rehydration therapy (p = 0.004), and frequency of administration (p = 0.02), also found significant differences in maternal practices with maternal age, with respect to foods that are restricted (p = 0.04) and use of “home remedies“ (p = 0.03). Conclusions: Globally, knowledge and feeding practices of children during acute diarrheal illness were associated with age and educational level of the mother, however, in particular analysis of these variables if an association was found in several indicators. Keywords: knowledge and health practices, complementary feeding, infant diarrhea, maternal age, primary and secondary education.
