--- Odontogenic Cysts are one of the most common disease entities that affect the maxillofacial region, particularly the region of the jaws. Studies have been conducted in various parts of the world, finding data that refer to other populations which have genetic characteristics very different from ours. This study allowed us to determine the prevalence of odontogenic cysts, as well as the more common types, the frequency by sex and age group, location and size more common. We reviewed the medical records with a diagnosis of odontogenic cyst at the Hipólito Unanue National Hospital in the period 2004 - 2009, for this referral to the Department of Statistics, which conducted the initial count. We also reviewed the record books operative reports of Surgery Oral and Maxillofacial. The required data were transcribed manually using the data collection sheet. The results were processed using SPSS 19.0, which were conducted univariate, bivariate analysis and testing Xi² (Chi Square) to find the significance between them. A prevalence of odontogenic cysts was 0.005%. Radicular cyst was the most frequent (69.5%), followed by dentigerous cysts (26.8%). We found a slight preponderance of females (56.1%), most frequently affecting the age group 10 to 19 years and 20 to 29 years, with 28%. The maxillary anterior region was the most affected (78%), where the most common size was 0.1 to 2.0 cm. (91.5%). KEY WORDS: ODONTOGENIC CYSTS - RADICULAR CYST - PREVALENCE - FREQUENCY.
