--- Salt intake is a health problem whose intake exceeds the physiological need. Excessive intake of sodium is the main risk factor for high blood pressure as well as a contributor to cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and other chronic no communicable diseases. The lifestyle of the university and its environment means that they are exposed to greater consumption of ultra-processed foods and / or convenience foods high in sodium, nutrient deficiency and high energy density, leading them to a diet low nutritional quality. Objective: To determine the consumption of current salt and sodium in college students of the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of San Marcos in the years 2013 - 2014. Methodology: transversal, descriptive and observational study. The sample consisted of 140 university students from 5 schools Academic Professional School of Medicine: Nutrition, Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine and Medical Technology. To estimate the sodium salt intake and dietary surveys were applied: the reminder 24 hours to evaluate the current diet and frequency of consumption of processed foods and industrialized countries to evaluate the customary diet of this source. Also, the standard method of 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium was used to determine sodium intake in a total sample of 96 students from the five aforementioned schools. Students participating were explained I study parallel to the presentation of reported according to ethical criteria of all research consent. Results: Dietary intake of salt and sodium were on average 11 g / day and 4178 ± 622 mg / day respectively. Habitual intake of sodium, from food processed and industrialized through frequency semiquantitative food consumption was found between 1849 ± 831 mg / day. While the sodium content in 24-hour urine was 3858 ± 1545 mg/ day. Conclusions: The current intake of salt and sodium in university students were higher than WHO recommendations, 5 g / day and 2000 mg / day, respectively.
