-- In the field of Periodontics and Maxillofacial Surgery, we find many different bone defects as a result of infectious diseases or trauma, which will cause severe functional problems and / or aesthetic, which will require complex treatment. In recent years, contributions to this issue have done mainly through combinations of various biomaterials, but the investigators haven’t looked for new materials to give us a new alternative of treatment and prices available to patients. That's why in this study we are trying to introduce “freeze-dried amniotic membrane“ as a new biomaterial for dental applications. The aim of this study was investigate the effect of freeze-dried amniotic membrane used as a barrier in the process of guided bone regeneration in rabbit tibia, for this study was used 10 New Zealand rabbits of 2 to 2.5 kg aged 4 to 6 months in which circular bone defects of 4 mm diameter were created in the lower region of the rabbit hindlimb (tibia). The rabbits were divided in 2 groups, a control group (no membrane was placed) and a study group (freeze-dried amniotic membrane was placed as a barrier). Animals were sacrificed at 6 weeks after surgery, analyzing clinical, radiological and histological study were done. At 6 weeks the control group showed signs of poor bone formation, with a large proportion of adipose tissue occupying the defect area. The study group showed complete bone regeneration of the defect (clinically) at 6 weeks. X-rays reveals a significant change in the pattern of trabecular bone samples in the study group compared with the control group. It was observed Histologically that most of the samples in the study group had a 100% continuity with normal bone defect, this coupled with the compact mature bone formation, whereas in the control group, most samples were found only the presence of some islands of immature bone, with a moderate bone formation that filled at most 1 / 3 the bone defect created. The conclusion is that bone regeneration was significantly higher in the defects covered with freeze-dried amniotic membrane compared with samples from the control group in which we didn’t put any kind of barrier.
