Objective: This study was aimed at determining the influence of general perception about the disease and treatment in patients with hypertension for adherence to antihypertensive treatment. Material and Methods: The study design was observational-type comparative on the patient population of ESSALUD of Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Mártins, they were attended as outpatients in clinics of cardiology between January and June 2007 through surveys with multiple type questionnaire that included information on age and sex. Later we identified comparative groups (compliant and non-compliant to treat high blood pressure) using the questionnaire self-reported of Morisky. Finally using questionnaires IPQ-R and BMQ, both groups were compared using statistical tests for each group of variables studied. Results: We studied 153 patients of whom 45.8% were adherent and non-adherent 54.2%. It was noted that the average age was significantly higher in the non-compliant group (p less than 0.001). The non-adherent were stronger emotional representations (p same than 0.003). We found a significant correlation between age and perceptions about the treatment (sperman'rho: -0,242). The adherents had higher scores on the necessity of treatment for high blood pressure (p same than 0.003) and the group of non-adherent were highest concern specific to treatment (p same than 0.024). Conclusions: Age, the emotional factors related to the perception of the disease, understanding of the disease and beliefs about treatment are strongly related to adherence to drug treatment of hypertension. Key Words: Adherence, Illness perception, Belief about Medication, Hypertension.
