--- OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological and obstetric characteristics of maternal deaths in Santa Rosa Hospital in the period 2000-2015. METHODS: A descriptive and retrospective study. The population consisted of total maternal deaths in the Santa Rosa Hospital in the period 2000-2015. Sheets epidemiological investigations of all maternal deaths were reviewed dead. The information was collected through a sheet of previously validated data collection. To analyze absolute and percentage distributions were used. RESULTS: In the period 2000 - 2015, there have been 21 maternal deaths at Santa Rosa Hospital. 90% of maternal deaths occurred in the postpartum period and 86% were for direct causes. The main causes of death were hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (38.1%), uterine atony (23.8%) and postpartum endometritis (14.3%). The average age of all of them was 30 years, 80% came from Lima and mostly had as main occupation home (86%). The total of the dead had at least a delay in reaching the hospital and 52.4% did not recognize the risk. 86% were primiparous or nulliparous, 38% had had no pre-natal control. 71% of mothers of deceased children born alive. CONCLUSIONS: Between 2000 and 2015 21 maternal deaths, predominantly direct (86%) were recorded, being the leading cause of death in pregnancy hypertensive disease (38%). The proportion of maternal deaths among adolescents is higher than the national level. All of the cases had at least one delay. 86% of the dead had as occupation home and 9% were housemaids. 38% of the dead had no pre natal control.
