The aim of the present study was to compare radiographic measurements using the parallelling and Bite-Wing techniques with intrasurgical measurements of the alveolar bone level. 111 interproximal sites of 25 patients were examined. 54 radiographs were taken presurgically by using a splint containing an orthodontic wire, which was placed on the buccal side in each tooth, as landmark. Intrasurgical probing was done during flap surgery using the same splint. The open bone measurement represented the true value. Comparison between radiographic and intrasurgical measurements was performed using the Student t-test. The Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between the radiographic bone level with respect to the intrasurgical bone level. Parallelling technique was more accurate (p > 0.05) than Bite – Wing tecnique to evaluate the alveolar bone level. Both methods no statistically significantly underestimated (p > 0.05) the alveolar bone level. The Paralllelling technique no statistically significantly overestimated (p > 0.05) the alveolar bone level. Both radiographic methods showed an excellent correlation between the radiographic bone level and the intrasurgical bone level. The result of this study suggest that Parallelling tecnique should be used to evaluate the alveolar bone level. Key words: alveolar bone level, radiographic methods, intrasurgical probing, radiographic bone level, intrasurgical bone level.
