--- The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the yacon as a prebiotic on the diet of male BUT (British United Turkeys) line turkeys. The yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a vegetable that contains actives photochemical components, their function is to act as a source of prebiotics, not digestible ingredients that acts as a selective stimulator for the growing of more than one benefit bacteria, bringing to the animal positive effects on the intestinal physiology. The importance of this, is that in some countries the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter in poultry has been forbidden, so the search for new alternatives is increasing. For this study, 150 male BUT line turkeys, 10 weeks old, were assignated randomly in 5 groups of treatment (n=30): 0.035% zinc bacitracina, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% yacon powder and control (not antibiotics, not yacon) (T1,T2,T3, T4, T0). Significative differences were not seen in the weight gain (p≥0.05) between treatments; nevertheless the 0.25% and 0.50% yacon powder groups showed a weight gain of 3% and 1.8% higher that the control group. In reference of the food consumption, difference (p≤0.05) where found between the zinc bacitracina and 0.75% yacon powder groups, showing less consumption on 6% and 14% respectively. The food conversion index was not affected for the different treatments (p≥0.05), nevertheless 0.25% and 0.75% yacon powder groups showed lower values in 0.49%. Whit this results, we concluded that 0.25% yacon powder can be used as an alternative on the diet of BUT line turkeys in the feeding phase.
