In this work was determined experimentally the potency of the antibiotic Tylosin tartrate, through an alternative methodology for assessing microbiological to the one described in the USP 30. The method “Turbidimetric“ mentioned in the USP 30 for the valuation of the antibiotic potency of Tylosin in laboratory conditions was not the most optimal, because it showed difficulty in its execution and variability in the measurements of the reading responses to a biological system. Therefore, we evaluated other methodologies and parameters of the test until finding a method and conditions to offer an alternative option, sensitive, specific and reproducible to Veterinary Laboratories, for the antibiotic potency valuation of Tylosin. The methodology used for this determination was the microbiological method of diffusion by excavation, based on the guidelines given in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP 30) and the British Pharmacopoeia (BP 2008). We used three batches of Tylosin tartrate (different lots; active ingredients), a USP standard and the Kocuria rhizophila ATCC 9341 microorganism. This microbiological method led to satisfactory results and consistent with the content specifications of lots assessed from Tylosin tartrate, according to USP 30.
