-- The purpose of the research was to relate the level of knowledge of oral hygiene of mentally challenged children and to evaluate the oral hygiene of these children at the Ann Sullivan Centre in Peru. The model consisted of 90 parents and their respective mentally challenged children (such as Down syndrome, mental retardation, and autism). In the first phase of the research the parents’ level of knowledge in oral hygiene was evaluated. A questionnaire consisting of 12 questions divided into four parts: 3 questions about elements of oral hygiene, 3 about the habits of oral hygiene, 3 about oral pathology related to oral hygiene, and 3 questions about techniques of oral hygiene was used. In the second phase of the research the index of oral hygiene of the mentally challenged children was evaluated. The results obtained in the research determined that a regular level of knowledge in parents – approximately 68.9% and the index of oral hygiene found in children was poor – 88.9% which established statistically significant relation between the index of oral hygiene of the children and the parents’ level of knowledge – p<0,05 and a regular inverse correlation of p=-0,58 with p<0,05 concluding that the parents’ level of regular knowledge was reflected in a poor index of oral hygiene in the children
