--- Introduction: The use of drains in complicated appendicitis is controversial. Its purpose is to drain the peritoneal cavity in the postoperative to prevent the formation of collections that might cause abscesses. However, there are multiple investigations now questioning its utility, attributing even cause complications. Objective: To determine the frequency of cases of complicated appendicitis surgery laparoscopically they used drainage. Location: Dos de Mayo National Hospital. Analysis unit: Operational records of patients with postoperative diagnosis of complicated appendicitis who had laparoscopy surgery in the service of emergency surgery of the Dos de Mayo National Hospital during the period January 2015 to December 2015. Results: The study population was 163. The average age was 32.17 years, with a predominance of males 57%. Necrotic stage appendicitis in 60 and 89 were found in perforated stadium. The most common post-operative diagnosis was acute appendicitis with localized peritonitis. 66% of cases use drainage, the postoperative diagnosis that more indicated drainage was acute appendicitis with generalized peritonitis. The laminar drainage was used in 93% of the cases with some kind of drain. Patients who did not use drain had an average stay of 3.85 days and the patients who did use it 4.80 days. Conclusions: The frequency of cases of complicated appendicitis who used drainage was 66.26% (108/163). Acute appendicitis with generalized peritonitis were the most used drainage with 51/54 cases, acute perforated appendicitis stage used it in almost 90% of the time. No significant difference was found in the time of hospital stay among patients using drainage versus those who did not use. Keywords: Complicated appendicitis, drainage.
