-- Objective: To determine the surgical epidemiology of the acute appendicitis in pediatric population of the National Hospital Sergio E. Bernales in the period 2007-2011. Material and Methods: Descriptive, retrospective study of transverse court, characterized by the compilation of the information of clinical histories in study patients. The target population was 498 patients from 0 to 14 years. The instrument was a data collection sheet suitably prepared for study purposes. Results: Acute appendicitis in males predominated (65,6 %). The group of the most frequent age of presentation of the disease demonstrated in teenagers (60,8 %). The principal symptom and clinical above-mentioned sign was the migratory pain, with 100 % and that of Mc Burney, with 92 % of presentation respectively. The evolution of the disease was for the most part typical (90,8 %). 86,7 % of patients presented leukocytosis with left shift. The time of evolution, in the group of 0 to 23 hours it was 31,8 % of frequency. Preoperative hospital stay, had on average 7.9 hours. The postoperative hospital stay between 4 to 6 days was 51.0%. Conventional surgery was the treatment of choice in 89.2% of patients. In the preoperative diagnosis of uncomplicated appendicitis was 58.2% and 41.8% was complicated. The perforated appendix was the most frequent 39.0% and 37.3% in both the intraoperative diagnosis as the histopathology, respectively. The most common postoperative complication was wound infection (3.2%). Conclusions: Acute appendicitis was more frequent in males. The age group most often occurs in adolescents. The main symptoms and signs referred to were: the migratory pain and McBurney, respectively. Most patients had a typical course of disease and leukocytosis with left shift. The time evolution in the 0 to 23 hours was the most frequent. Preoperative hospital stay, had on average 7.9 hours and postoperative hospital stay was less than 6 days in more than three quarters of the population. The type of surgery was a predominance of conventional surgery. The preoperative diagnosis, with respect to stage complicated, differed greatly from the results of intraoperative and histopathological diagnosis. High congruence between intraoperative and histopathological diagnosis, the stage being drilled, the most often both. The type of postoperative complication, was the most prevalent surgical wound infection. -- Key words: Acute appendicitis, pediatric population, diagnosis, hospital stay.
