--- Introduction: Gender violence is a social problem worldwide and during pregnancy increases significantly the likelihood of complications, one of which is the threat of preterm birth. Objective: To determine if gender violence is a risk factor for preterm birth in pregnant women seen at the “Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal” in February 2016. Design: Analytical, prospective and transversal. Location: Tocolysis Unit and Outpatients - “Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal” Participants: 170 pregnant women included in the study which were classified in the study group (85 pregnant women with preterm birth) and comparison group (85 pregnant women without preterm birth). Interventions: to describe the variables absolute / relative frequencies and measures of central tendency and dispersion is used. To measure the risk, first Chi-square test was used with a significance of 5% and then calculated the Odds Ratio (OR). Results: The average age of pregnant women with and without preterm labor was similar 28.4 years and 27.6 years, respectively. In both groups were, most were high school degree were cohabiting and housewife. Regarding obstetric characteristics; pregnant women with preterm birth have fewer unplanned pregnancy rate (29.4 vs 42.4%), and adequate prenatal care (72.9 vs 90.6%); however the preterm labor history of hospitalization was more frequent in this group (36.5 vs 4.7%). Risk factors for preterm labor were psychological violence (OR = 4.4), physical violence (OR = 3.4) and sexual violence (OR = 9.6). The main forms of psychological violence were shouting and humiliation, physical violence were pushing and halons while in relation to sexual violence, sexual harassment and sexual abuse were identified. In the three components of gender violence, the main aggressor was the partner. Conclusions: Gender violence in its three forms, psychological, physical and sexual violence are risk factors for preterm labor in pregnant women seen at the “Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal” in February 2016. Keywords: preterm labor, risk factor, gender violence.
