This study deals with the PROBLEM of whether or not there exist significant differences regarding to the reading comprehension of a group of students working with the direct teaching didactic strategy and another group of students who do not work with such strategy of the School of Initial Education of the Faculty of Education at the University of San Cristobal de Huamanga. The HYPOTHESIS stated is: There exist significant differences regarding to the reading comprehension level of a group of students working with the direct teaching strategy and another group not working with such strategy. The study POPULATION involved 42 first Cycle students being the average age 18; 36 females who have never been taught with this strategy, having little reading habit, and with a low reading comprehension level. A reading comprehension TEST was administered using a pretest_ postlest DESIGN and a control group designating randomly the 42 subjects population into two groups: one experimental and the other being control group. Two POLLS were also applied. One applied to the whole population and another to 10 Faculty of Education professors who have been lecturing the most related courses to the teaching of reading comprehension such as Methods of Intellectual Work, Spanish and Literature for the last past years. The RESULTS show that the initial punctuation marks on reading comprehension of the population under study were very low since most of the students (83.34%) got marks between 2 and 7. After the experimental treatment it was observed that there were statistically significant differences on the reading comprehension level of the group of students to whom the “direct teaching strategy“ treatment was applied compared to the group not receiving such strategy since the significance level between these two groups was 0.009 which deserves to be stated that the Control Group After had a numerical average of 7.19 whilst the Experimental Group After had 9.10; i.e., the latter was 2 marks greater than the first one (1.91). It can be seen that the experimental group had a better reading comprehension performance. CONCLUSION: Direct teaching strategy has significantly improved (both statistically and pedagogically - didactically) the first Cycle of the School of Initial Education students' reading comprehension of the Faculty of Education at the University of San Cristobal de Huamanga.
